Competition hots up at sailing club

THE glorious weather made for a bumper weekend of competition at Ely Sailing Club.
On Saturday, the annual Ladies Plate and Partner’s Trophy were sailed for with 12 boats sailing across the two events.
In the first round of the Ladies Plate there was a keen battle fought between mother and daughter Clare Christan and Hannah Wilcox. Eventually Wilcox, crewed by Carol White, crossed the line first followed by Christan, with Ellie Milne as crew.
In the second round Wilcox pulled out a lead by Christan and Milne capsized allowing Susie Sallis and Jo Broad through to take second place.
With two wins Wilcox and White were declared the winners with two points. Sallis and Broad were second with five points, Christan and Milne third with seven points and Marie Brown and Emma Rees were fourth with nine points.
A strawberry tea supplied by Commodore Gary Ungless and his wife Liz for the competitors before the Bob Utteridge Partner’s Trophy began.
Andy and Hannah Wilcox took an early lead and were not headed. Steve and Jo Broad tussled with Alan and Carol White for second. On the penultimate lap Alan and Carol went for a swim leaving the Broads to take second.
On Sunday, the force three south westerly breeze and sunshine resulted in one of the best turnouts so far this season.
The first race was a pursuit race, with the slower boats on handicap starting first. Simon Leeks in his solo soon pulled out an lead but was pressed hard by Ungless, also in a solo. Third at the finish were Kevin and Christine Levett in their graduate and Jack Knight, who had started in the last flight, managed to sail through the fleet to finish fourth.
In the handicap race, Knight in his laser pulled out a lead bit was chased by John Wells, also in a laser. Jack eventually lost line honours by three seconds on corrected time to Simon Leeks. Wells was third and Ungless fourth.
