ELY Sailing Club's Niall Pearcey fought off tenacious competition to claim victory in the Whitsun Cup.

Club commodore Pearcey, looked to have lost out on top spot to prolific pairing John and Molly Wells but a corrected time calculation put him 19 seconds ahead and secured his maiden cup victory.

Ten helms took part in the racing for the Whitsun Cup at the weekend with fickle winds making for riotously unpredictable conditions.

The Enterprises sailed by John and Molly Wells and Kevin and Scott Bilham along with Commodore Niall Pearcey in a Solo were the leading lights of the day.

In the first race Kevin Bilham pulled out a substantial lead but lost out at the final buoy to Niall Pearcey. After lunch John and Molly Wells shot into the lead and were never headed and maintained their supremacy over the commodore by over two minutes.

In the final race John and Molly Wells took line honours but lost out by 19 seconds on corrected time to Niall Pearcey who counted two firsts and so won the Trophy for the first time.
