Table Tennis TONY Comiskey enjoyed a profitable evening despite his Soham Comrades 2 side being held to a draw by visitors Ely 1.

Comiskey won three singles amd the doubles with Colin Gannon, who had earlier beaten Howard Middleton. Kin Choi Chan lost all three for Comrades, Middleton’s one plus two each from Hugo Brown and Ju Young constituting Ely’s share of the spoils.

Division 2 action saw Imps 1 force a draw against Haddenham 2 which was disappointing on the night but at least partly made up for the recent thrashing they received from the same team in the Handicap Cup.

Rod Smith played up for Haddenham and had a busy night, all his matches going to five sets. In the first, he eventually got home against John Bray 11-9, having been comfortable at 10-3. He went down in the other two, to Mike Johnston and Fred Laband but only after almighty efforts.

Ed Emmerson beat Laband and Bray three straight but dropped a leg to Johnston. With Phil Emmerson unable to bag a win - though he only lost at deuce in the fourth to Johnston - Haddenham needed the doubles to avoid defeat. The Emmersons duly obliged, beating Johnston and Laband in five sets.

Fulbourn 3 continued their push up the table with a convincing 9-1 victory over Comrades 4. Jim Reary and Nigel Bates won three singles each but Peter Xie came unstuck against Marc Sulman in the fifth. Peter was later taken to five by George Woods.

In a drawn match at Countess, Brian Mitchell won his customary three singles against the Leeks of Fulbourn 4, backed up by two from Steven Jugg. There were some tight games with Jugg holding off David Leek in the fifth but going down to Howard, also in the fifth. David and Howard cruised to a confident doubles win over Mitchell and Jugg to share the spoils.

In a Division 3, Rob Pownall only scored two as Ely 2 lost to Fulbourn 6, 7-3. Matt Gunton, Zac Davey and Andrew Segar got the better of Karen Byford and Hollie Pownall-Anderson, and Gunton and Davey tried their best but in vain against Pownall. Then the unexpected happened when Segar beat Pownall in four sets. Pownall and Byford recovered from this surprise to take the doubles.
