Comfortable win for Ely ladies
ELY’S City ever-improving season continued to gather momentum on Saturday as they breezed past struggling Bourne.
A brace from regular goal scorer Chanre Bond put Gemma Voutt’s side in control, with a solo effort from Jo Rayner proving the icing on the cake for a plucky Ely side.
The win moves Ely up into seventh place in East Division 2NW, with just six points separating them from third place Shefford and Sandy.
A cagey opening to the match saw the two sides exchange half-chances, though neither strike force was able to find a way through. Rayner had Ely’s best chance early on as she fired towards goal from close range after the ball was deflected into her path. Fortunately for Bourne, however, the goalkeeper was equal to the task and kept Rayner’s effort out.
The deadlock was broken in the 19th minute as an excellent penalty corner routine was worked wide to Bond, who made no mistake from close range.
Bourne might have drawn level on the half-hour mark only for a striker to fire wide of goal having eased past two defenders and the goalkeeper.
Rayner made the visitors pay moments short of half-time as she collected a ball flung in from wide on the left and drove home from range.
