Ely Tiger-16 12

ON a cold January morning the Tiger-16s were eager and ready to play their first game after the Christmas and New Year break.

Ely kicked off and the game was evenly matched for the first 10 minutes until Sudbury scored an unconverted try.

For the rest of the half neither side gained an advantage until late when centre Adam Free kicked the ball over Sudbury's defensive line, putting Sudbury on the back foot.

The Tigers pressed for a try and, after several phases of play, were rewarded when fly-half Joel Scott-Paul both scored the try and converted it.

In the second half Sudbury kicked off and very soon scored a second try but again missed the conversion. Ely then pressed and pressed to be rewarded with a good team try finished off with a wonderful 35-yard run and score by Sean Kennett. The conversion was missed.

With 10 minutes left Sudbury broke through and scored to make the final score 17-12 to Sudbury. The game was a very tight one, which either team could have won.

THIS was to be a difficult game but Ely had an excellent start as Freddy Smith sprinted down the wing to score.

Ely now five points up, steam-rollered through Sudbury with Lewis Jenkins breaking and scoring Ely's second try. Then just before the half-time whistle, the Tigers forwards drove powerfully giving Jerome Scott-Paul a try for a 15-0 Ely half-time lead.

The second half started with several Sudbury substitutions, this was to be a problem for Ely as they had played a very aggressive, tiring first-half, and conceded two tries. However the Tigers came back and won a penalty which fly-half Chris Hobson, kicked.

This success was short-lived as Ely conceded another two tries.

With minutes left Ely made one final attempt on Sudbury's line. A penalty was taken quickly and the pack charged into and through the Sudbury defence from short range but the try was disallowed and Sudbury had won 20-18.
