DENNIS Lightning could not have wished for a better start to his tenure in sole charge of Ely City as they romped to a win over Godmanchester on Monday night.

An Andy Chatters hat-trick in 11 minutes was one of the keys to Ely's success, as they scored six goals in a second half super-show - the first match since joint-manager Steve Taylor resigned at the weekend.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, Goddy took the lead on 17 minutes with a quick free-kick awarded for a back-pass by Tony Brown. The Robins levelled four minutes later, Robbie Mason lashing home the rebound from an Ashley Brand shot.

Goddy regained the initiative on 32 minutes but a Chatters cross allowed Brand to score his first goal for the club two minutes before the break.

Simon Warren's header early in the second half put the Robins ahead for the first time, before Chatters turned on the style with goals in the 58th, 63rd and 67th minutes. The second of those was a penalty awarded for deliberate handball, as a home defender got his marching orders.

Brand's second of the game was a half-volley on 71 minutes and Paul Cousins, also a former March Town United player, got his first Ely goal to round off the scoring late on.

Lightning said: "It's been a bad weekend for myself, the players and, I'm assuming, for the club. We had a meeting before the game and decided that we had a duty to carry on and do the best we could and I think the players, to their credit, did that.
