THE City of Ely First XI gathered some much needed momentum in the run up to next week's season opener with a sound victory at March.

Ely won the toss and bowled first; dismissing the March team for 149 in 43 overs and keeping the hosts scoring to a reasonably frugal 3.5 runs an over. Damian Sayers, Andrew Foster, Chris Reay and Andrew Buck took the bowling plaudits with two wickets a piece.

Tom Gooch, and Nigel Hailstone added the finishing touches to the scorecard as they picked up a wicket each. Ely were clinical in reply knocking off the modest total in 39 overs with opener Andrew Buck remaining at the crease for the entire innings finishing on 53 not out. He was ably supported by Mick Tickner, 26 and Jonny Wallace 15.

Both City of Ely teams face Cottenham in the opening weekend of the CCA league. The 1st team are at Paradise and the 2nd XI are playing away.
