THE City of Ely banished the disappointment of their Egham Trophy exit with victory over Wey Valley in the Denny Cup.

The early exchanges were close with Ely registering a single shot on all four rinks on the first end and steady rather than spectacular progress being made for the first part of the match.

Contests at this stage of the competition are hard fought and it seemed as though the tie was going to follow the normal pattern. However, Nicky Brett’s rink had other ideas, with Chris Falkner playing superbly at three, supported by Matt Marsden at lead and Wayne Bailey at two they stormed into a 12-0 lead after only seven ends.

On Greg Harlow’s rink, Robert Elmore having been promoted to lead was in imperious form and Andy Easy’s rink of Stuart Seymour, Edward Elmore and Jamie Reynolds was also dominating their opposite numbers.

With their early confidence dented badly Wey Valley seemed to crumble under the continued pressure. The matches, played over four rinks and a total of 21 ends would normally go the full distance but in an extraordinary turn of events Wey Valley threw the towel in after only three quarters of the match had been completed with the score standing at 76-29 in favour of Ely. Ely now go into the final to be staged at Falcon Indoor Bowls Club in Chelmsford on Sunday, April 17.
