Ely City III 7
ELY finally managed to convert their flair and determination into a positive result.
Ely were awarded a penalty corner. The push out was poor and Ely were put on the back foot but the ball was eventually played out to Rich Marley who drove forward and crossed for Peter Jones to sweep the ball into the Town goal. Several minutes later, Ely again broke forward, Jones received the ball and struck the ball past the Town keeper and into the corner.
Further attacking play saw a short corner awarded to Ely again. This time a good push out was met by Bill Gilmore, who struck the ball only to see his shot saved but Jones was there to lift the ball over the stranded keeper.
Great attacking play from midfield by Rob Skilton and Marley saw Jones receive the ball and hit it low into the Town goal.
Every ball was chased down by the Ely team and Jones took the ball from a Town defender, worked his way into the area and hooked the ball through the Town keeper's legs, the ball travelling into the top corner of the goal. Another attack saw an excellent strike from the Ely centre back Trevor Hopkinson only for the ball to be parried into the path of Jones, who dispatched his sixth goal of the match.
A short time later, Skilton launched an attack from just inside the Town half and with excellent interplay, received the ball back in the Town area where he dispatched the ball under the falling opposition keeper.
Man of the match was Peter Jones.
