A FAMILY cricket festival proved to be the perfect way for children from six primary schools to show off their improved cricket skills.

The Witchford Cricket Festival at Robert Arkenstall Primary School, in Haddenham, was designed for school children in Years 5 and 6 who had completed five weeks of coaching.

The coaching, instigated by Witchford Sports Partnership and funded by the Big Lottery, was provided by Simon Cooper, who was assisted by eight sports leaders from Witchford Village College's Year 10.

Following pool matches and mini tournaments, Rackham Primary won the tournament with Little Thetford Primary in second and Mepal and Witcham Primary third.

Sarah Denney, PE teacher from Witchford Village College, said: "The idea of the festival is to bring together the pupils who have had the coaching and celebrate the sport.

"The matches were played in great spirit, with some skill and understanding of the game being demonstrated and we couldn't have asked for a better venue.

"The Year 10s have had their leadership experience extended and they have done a great job today, in both the organising and running of the matches. My thanks go to all who have attended and to Mr Sharp for allowing us to use the school.
