ELY City manager Dennis Lightning has confirmed that team captain Andy Chatters will be playing for the club next season.

Chatters has been linked with a move to Wisbech Town and his failure to commit to Ely had left Lightning doubtful about his skipper's future.

But, yesterday, the Ely manager confirmed that Chatters was staying. He said: "Andy will definitely sign for us this week and that is great news."

Lightning has also added to the squad, with no fewer than five new players.

Goalkeeper Lee Pacey and forward Lee James have made the move from last season's Kershaw Premier champions Great Shelford.

Left-back Jamie Alsop has joined Ely from Ipswich Wanderers while centre-forward Dave Daniels and midfielder Mark Kirkby have left Bedford Town and Newmarket Town respectively.

It's not all good news, however. Nick Impey and Jamie Thurlbourne have left Ely to sign for Newmarket and Tom Beech has signed for Bishop's Stortford.

Lightning said: "You have to expect to lose players during the summer.

"If a player is offered a few extra quid to play at another club then they will be seriously tempted.

"But we also have a lot of players at Ely who want to stay and help us improve.
