WICKEN triathlete and swimmer Cathy Thomson has raised vital funds for Cambridge Joint Playschemes by completing the Lucozade Sport Hydro Active Women's Challenge.

The 17-year-old is a teaching assistant at Granta Special School where, as part of the service offered by Cambridge Joint Playschemes, she helps to provide care for children and young adults with learning difficulties.

Cathy has taken an active role in raising funds for the playschemes and last week's 5k run helped to boost the total raised so far to around £400.

The teenager has been suffering with a knee injury but she battled on and completed the high-profile event in Hyde Park, London, in 24 minutes.

Cathy's mother Debbie said: "The playschemes have struggled to raise funds and they are important for many young people in the county.

"Cathy loves her work and she is extremely dedicated. These days we hear so many bad things about young people, so it is great to hear of those who do good work for their community."
