Captain's Log featuring Ely Vikings Korfball captain, Laura Matthews:

I HAVE been lucky enough to be first team captain of Ely Vikings Korfball Club for the past three seasons now and I'm really enjoying it. We are halfway through our third season and this has definitely been the most exciting one so far.

Vikings narrowly missed out on promotion to CKA division one last year, losing out 17-16 against Cambridge Tigers 2 over two play-off games. Team One are now determined to make it to the first division of the Cambridgeshire league and have been focusing on training hard and trying out new systems.

To gain more experience and to play at a higher level of competition than we're used to, we have also entered into the MRL (Midlands Regional League). We have already got two victories under our belt, beating Cambridge-based side Phoenix, and most recently, current league leaders Nottingham.

At local league level, Vikings 1 are currently sitting at the top of the division 2 table, having only lost one game so far this season. I am feeling confident we will stay there to the end. Everyone in the squad trains hard, and supports each other both on and off the pitch. It really is an honour to captain a dedicated and enthusiastic team and be part of such a friendly, sociable and supportive club.

Other successes this season include winning Ely Standard's Club of the Year award and three of our under 16's making the England squad. This is an exciting time for what is still a relatively new club. I just hope we can continue our fantastic season and finish on a high.

Vikings currently have four teams entered into the CKA league, but we are always looking for new players - both seniors and juniors. So if you fancy meeting new people, trying something different or getting fitter please come along - we train every Monday at Ely College sports hall. Juniors (under 13's) 6-7pm, Seniors 7-9pm. For more information on Vikings or Korfball please contact our development officer Andy on andrewdunlop@hotmail.com with "korfball" in the subject.
