THE Isle of Ely Rowing Club boated twenty competitive crews across three divisions in the first Cambridge Winter League Race of 2009.
Ely crews raced in most of the event categories in the race meet which took place on the River Cam on Sunday (January 18) with teams competing in boats ranging from a Men's Veteran D eight, through to a Men's Junior 15 single sculler.
The ladies were also out in force, in quads, double sculls and singles and there were mixed crews in rowing fours and double sculls.
"This is an impressive start to the Head of the Cam Winter League races," said club captain Jo Cotgrove, who herself coxed the men's eight, raced in a women's Senior four double and also in her single scull. "Several of our members have raced in two or three divisions in different crews, so we've made very full use of our range of boats."
The Isle of Ely crews - who are used to the straight stretches of water on the River Ouse at Ely - had to grapple with the Cam's famous 'Grassy Corner' as well as a storng head-wind on the course, which covered 2800m.
The promising Womens Junior 16 double scull crew of Jenny Kingsmill and Anna Towriss raced first in Division 2 and then joined crew mates Emma Pencheon and Steph Boughey and cox Ellen Bridges to form a quad scull in Division 3.
Adam Hughes had his first ever experience of racing on the River Cam, racing over the course twice, first in a Junior 15 single scull and then in a men's senior 4 event with Andrew Turton.
Earlier Turton had competed in the mens senior 4 single sculls event and again with fiancé Ella Rands in the mixed doubles. Both Ella and Andrew completed the course three times in different events during the morning.
