Tyler Goodjohn insists everything is going to plan ahead of his return to the ring later this month.
The Sutton fighter has been out of action since his English welterweight title defeat to Johnny Garton last September but has been going toe-to-toe with some of the country’s finest talents in the gym to prepare him for his July 22 comeback at the Brentwood Centre, Essex.
Among those is super lightweight prospect Ohara Davies, who takes on Josh Taylor for the Commonwealth title this weekend and former Olympian, Bradley Saunders, who made short work of Casey Blair last weekend with a TKO victory in Newcastle.
“Training has been going great,” the 26-year-old said.
“I’m back at my old gym and it has been great being around all the other guys who have got big fights coming up.
“I’ve been sparring Ohara Davies, who has a huge fight on Sky which could put him in the top 10 and Bradley Saunders, who is an experienced guy, so my sparring has been awesome. I’m enjoying training and learning every day.”
Goodjohn, whose record stands at 12 wins and five losses from 17 fights, has also been running his own gym in Wentworth, and admits it has had an effect on his training – but says he has taken it in his stride.
“I’ve been training under much tougher circumstances than usual,” he said.
“I’ve been going back to my gym in Essex where I started my professional career and won my English title.
“I’ve been going there three days a week because of work commitments so on the other days I’ve had to draw on my experience and dedication as a pro and train myself to the instructions of my trainer, Peter Sims.”
Goodjohn also says his most recent training camp has been somewhat of a learning curve - and that his days at welterweight may have come to an end.
“My weight isn’t a problem but I am having to consider moving up to super welterweight for this fight and in the future,” he said.
“I’ve seemed to grow out of welterweight so I will have to see how I perform in this fight at 11 stone and go from there.”
