Wentworth fighter Tyler Goodjohn is hoping going back to where it all began will fire him to future success.

Goodjohn has been out of the ring since September, but is now back training with former mentor and manager, Peter Sims, ahead of a ring return on July 22.

He had been fighting under the tutelage of St Ives Boxing Academy’s Steve Whitwell, but admits that returning to his Essex gym - where he first cut his teeth as a professional - was something that had always played on his mind.

“When I was training in Essex before, me and Pete were like father and son,” he said.

“We had a bust up, but, like any argument, time goes on and you make up. I really rate Steve as a trainer and he’s a great friend but Essex was always in the back of my mind.

“It was my first gym when I turned pro, has had world champions come out of it and I get on so well with everyone there.”

Tyler will end an 10 month absence at the Brentwood Centre in two month’s time with a four-round tune-up scrap – something he admits he should have done before taking on Johnny Garton for the English Welterweight title back in September.

“I should have had a fight like this before the Garton fight,” he said.

“I think inactivity has held my career back more than anything else. Having three fights in three years in terrible and if I could have done it differently then I would have.”

Goodjohn’s 18th career encounter will be at super welterweight, and despite being out of action for the longest period of his career, the 26-year-old is adamant fitness will not be an issue – and is determined to turn in a performance worthy of his ‘El Tornado’ nickname.

“I’ve been running ever since my last fight and I’ve not stopped training at all,” he said. “I just need to get back in there, shed some ring rust and get going.

“I’m not going to sit here and say I want to be world champion but I will go out there every time and deliver the best fight possible. I’ve been on cards with fighters like Anthony Joshua and my fight has come out as the fight of the night.

“The main thing with me is that I always give value for money. I always have good fights that are entertaining and that will always put me in good stead for the future.”
