ALAN Alsop was pleased with Ely City’s 2-2 draw at Thetford on Tuesday night, despite the Robins squandering a number of good chances to come away with a win.

Though they had to come from behind in the second half to get back on terms, Ely continued to create plenty of chances throughout the latter stages of the match and may have gone on to win but for some errant finishing.

“It was a good result because Thetford have had a very good run in pre-season so far, including a win over Needham Market and a draw at Haverhill,” said boss Alsop.

“Considering I had nine players missing through injury and holidays I think overall it was a good result.”

Ely moved into the lead at the half-way stage of the first half after Lee Parkinson drilled home from the penalty spot but suffered a setback after striker Tom Beech was withdrawn with an injury.

Alsop’s men continued to press home their advantage however, and came close to a second goal on a number of occasions only to be denied by some excellent goalkeeping.

The Robins held their lead until early in the second half when Thetford were awarded a penalty of their own, which was duly dispatched to level the scores.

Things soon worsened for Ely as a runner from midfield was allowed to wander into the box and nod home to put the hosts in front.

Ely responded well to the setback however, and created a number of chances before finally drawing level with 20 minutes to go through Josh Bridgeman who smashed home from 25 yards.

Ely will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Lakenheath for their final pre-season friendly.

Meanwhile, Ely announced this week that Marshall Vauxhall in Ely had agreed to be their official first team tracksuit sponsor for the 2011-12 season.

As a part of the landmark deal, Marshall would also be supplying the team with a people carrier to help them travel to away fixtures for the upcoming season.
