SOHAM will finish the season in eighth place after losing their penultimate match against second-bottom Diss on Tuesday night.

Diss took a 1-0 lead into half-time after scoring from a quick break when Soham surrendered possession in the middle of the park.

They doubled their lead with 15 minutes to go before Paul Jones struck a sweet shot into the top right corner of the net, after a Charles Libam cross, five minutes from time.

Soham boss Ian Benjamin said: "It was a shocking performance, especially in the first half, and Paul Jones, who's been superb recently, looked the only player likely to score."

n On Saturday Benjamin accepted the blame as Leiston came from behind twice to claim their first ever victory over Soham.

He said: "The players didn't do much wrong, and it was my decisions that cost us. We played a 4-3-3 formation and I should have switched more defensively when we were 2-1 up. I've been feeling pretty down about it because the lads' effort was superb."

Rangers first attack succeeded. In the 15th minute Charles Libam raced on to Scott Johnson's throughball and fired across the keeper from the edge of the box.

Lee McGlone unleashed an unstoppable drive into the top right corner to equalise, two minutes into the second half.

Aaron Turner restored Soham's advantage in the 55th minute by heading home Paul Jones's cross, after a quick free-kick.

Leiston then applied pressure, with Lea Jordan leaping to tip two shots over the bar. But from the second save, on 80 minutes, the resulting corner swung straight in. And two minutes from time McGlone's glancing touch went in off the post.
