SOHAM Town Rangers boss Ian Benjamin has targeted a strong second half to the season starting against league leaders Hitchin on Monday.

The Greens have found wins hard to come so far this term but Benjamin believes his side are capable of producing the goods and he expects their fortunes to change from next week when they take on the championship favourites.

“In the games we have played against Hitchin in the past we have always had a real go and really given them a run for their money and I expect that will be the case again on Monday,” said Benjamin.

“As always we will try to get our passing game going and we won’t be afraid to attack because I believe that their weakness lies in the centre of the defence.

“We will set up with our two wide players and we will be giving it a go, we want to keep getting forward and be decisive.”

Hitchin came into the game on the back of a 19-game unbeaten run, including 15 victories and 56 goals, an enviable average of almost three goals per game. The club sit at the summit of the Zameretto Division One Central with an 11-point cushion over second-placed Arlesey Town.

Soham by contrast, sit second from bottom and have won just three of their 18 games so far this season, with just 23 goals scored.

Despite their lowly placing however, Benjamin believes his young side have got what it takes to surge up the league in the coming weeks and months.

“We went on a superb run in the second half of last season and I see no reason why we can’t do that again,” he said. “Creating chances has not been a problem so far this season it’s scoring goals where we have fell down and I think we have got to work on that if we want to push up the league.

“Consistency is going to be crucial this year. The players are working hard enough and their attitude is that they want to win so I hope we can get on a good run and start picking up results.”

Midfielder Shawn Richards left the club over the Christmas period, with Cambridge City wide-man Declan Rogers joining the Greens on loan. Boss Benjamin said Rogers would provide Soham with another option going forward though admitted his frustration at the recent spell of bad weather that had brought limited opportunity to utilise the youngster.
