Squash Two brothers contested the final of the annual knockout competition at Ely Squash and Leisure last weekend.
In a pulsating match, Ben Mitchell finally overcame his younger brother, Ryan Bamber, but only after going two games to love down.
Mitchell fought back to take the match to 2-2, and in the fifth he had the edge thanks, in part, to his opponent beginning to tire.
Many of the rallies were of the highest quality, with both players demonstrating remarkable retrieving and excellent shot making. The two are both in the squash and leisure team that plays in the Cambridgeshire league.
The tournament included two other competitions, the plate, for players knocked out in the first round of the main event, and the handicap. The plate final was contested by two of the club’s directors, Nico Bacon and Greg Mitchell, with Bacon winning relatively easily, 3-0.
The handicap final was much closer, with the youngest player in the tournament, teenager James Howes, winning the first of the three-game final and then having a series of match points in the second, but failing to convert any into victory. He then lost the third game to his opponent Dave Mankellow, who took the match.
The club, situated next to Ely Rugby Club, is always keen to accept new members, and has players of all standards and ages, many of them playing in the internal club leagues. Tel: 01353-662156.
