A SPECTACULAR freekick was the difference between the teams as Soham Town Rangers picked up a 1-0 win at home to Bromsgrove Rovers.

Though the game was largely dominated by a pair of robust defences, the game was turned on the hour mark by a brilliant freekick from Scott Johnson which clipped the edge of the wall on the way to finding the top-corner.

The win moves Ian Benjamin's side onto 36 points and keeps them in 14th place with their step four status virtually secure save for a miraculous loss of form and providence.

As well as a timely three points for the Greens, there was also the welcome news of the return to first-team action of talisman Charles Libam, who was thrown into the fray for the last twenty minutes having spent the last six months on the sidelines.

Despite the game being principally a tale of stifling defending, the opening 45 minutes was still a lively affair with a decent array of chances falling to both sides. Andy Furnell had the Greens' first real effort on goal as he smashed narrowly over from 25 yards early on.

Michael Simpson also came close to opening the scoring for Soham, but his header from a Scott Johnson cross looped marginally wide of the post. At the other end meanwhile, the returning Lea Jordan also had to be on his toes to deny a superbly struck volley from Graham Deakin.

Jordan was once again thrust into the action in the first flushes of the second-half as Rovers' Barry Woolley powered a header towards goal, forcing Jordan to a produce a fine save to keep Soham's lead in tact.

The key moment of the match followed not long after Jordan's sterling work in the home goal as Simpson was abruptly felled 25 yards out to hand Soham a dangerous freekick. Bromsgrove were suitably punished for their sins just moments later as Johnson fired home.

Bromsgrove pushed hard to find a way back into the game in the later stages and, but for a lack of cutting edge up-front which saw chances from Kevin Banner and Woolley fly just wide, they might have pulled level.

It wasn't to be though, and Soham held out for their second league win in a row, a feat that haven't achieved since early November.
