It was a tough afternoon for Ely as they were well beaten by high-flying Newmarket at the Downham Road ground.

Mid-table City struggled to live with the pace of the Newmarket attack and seven goals saw them to a comfortable win.

Ely, who sit sixth in Division 4NW, will look to re-group ahead of next week’s visit to Haverhill Ladies II.

Elsewhere, Ely I boosted their hopes of survival by picking up a point at rivals Bourne.

City went down 3-1 when the two teams met in September but a much more resilient performance from Ely on Saturday saw them come away with a point in a 1-1 draw.

The draw moves Ely to within five points of safety, with eight games remaining.

Bourne took advantage of a slow start by Ely to move into the lead, a short corner powered home by the host’s captain.

But Ely fought back and piled on the pressure. Mid-way through the first half, midfielder Emily Radcliffe delivered the ball into the D from a free-hit just outside the 25 yard line, which found Jo Rayner.

Rayner turned and smashed home to bring the scores level.

Ely worked some more opportunities in the first half but were unable to apply the finishing touch.

After the break, Ely stepped up a gear and maintained possession in the Bourne half of the pitch, winning a string of short corners.

Pam Clarke rain shots in on the home goal but Bourne goalkeeper and defence managed to keep her efforts out.

Player of the match was awarded to Radcliffe.
