Football Ely City 1 Mildenhall Town 2

ELY’S worrying dip in form continued on Tuesday night as they lost out to high-flying Mildenhall at the Unwin Ground.

Adam Murray hauled Ely level early in the second half after Andrew Wood’s opener for the visitors but it wasn’t enough for the Robins as Mildenhall netted again through Allicion Blake just shy of the hour mark.

The loss came just three days after Alan Alsop’s men went down 2-0 at Felixstowe and Walton and leaves them with just one win in their last 10 games.

The Robins sit in 14th place in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, just 11 points clear of the relegation zone with 10 games left to play.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium for both sides on Tuesday night but arguably the best of the first half went to Mildenhall’s Wood, who saw his shot cleared off the line by Sam Parkinson after he latched onto a through ball.

The visitors managed to break the deadlock three minutes after the half-time break as Wood collected a pass from Kris Thomas and squeezed his shot in at the near post, with keeper Lee Pacey trying in vain to narrow the angle.

Ely came back fighting however, and drew level from a set piece. Ben Lawrence nodded a deep corner back into the heart of the box and Adam Murray was alert to head home the equaliser, his fourth goal of the season.

It took little more than two minutes for the visitors to regain their lead however, as Ely were caught out with a sweeping move. A ball down the right wing was whipped in by Thomas, with Blake adding a simple finish in the middle of the box.

Ely threw caution to the wind in the final stages of the match in a bid to find an equaliser but were unable to break a resolute Mildenhall defence.

Chris Sterecki was awarded player of the match.
