MORE than 470 runners were at the start line for the annual New Year's Eve 10K, which again proved a hit with competitors.

The race, which is organised by Ely Runners, drew participants from across the region, and the overall winner was Guy Amos, of City of Norwich AC, who won with a time of 32min 7sec.

Despite being first across the line, Amos was unable to match his winning time of 2003, a course record, which still stands, of 31.08.

The first woman home was Ruth Proctor, also of City of Norwich AC, who came home in a time of 36.30, a new women's course record by 25 seconds.

There was some joy for the host club when Claire Willer crossed the line as the second woman, with a time of 38.15, a personal best by two seconds.

This was one of five personal bests set by competitors from Ely Runners. The others were Stephen Tovey, Leah Brock, Jude McCarthy and Claire Law.

The field sets off from Little Downham village hall and runs through California and Pymoor before ending up back at the start.

Following a rapid thaw, conditions were wet underfoot but good for the time of year being relatively mild with a light to moderate wind. Every finisher was given a bottle of real ale, brewed by the village's Fenland Brewery.

John Turner, secretary of Ely Runners, said: "Some of the weather forecasting was completely over-the-top and I think we lost a few competitors through that, but we still had a great day with 477 finishers.

"People say it's a very friendly race. The course is fast, which people enjoy.

"Also, I think that with it taking place in the morning, people can compete in the race without feeling guilty about their New Year's Eve celebrations!"

Mr Turner thanked all the marshals, helpers, and event sponsors.
