HOTSHOT George Lockwood finished third in the county archery championships - despite only picking up a bow for the first time last year. George, 12, only took up the sport last February when he attended junior sessions at Littleport Leisure Centre. But he has made startling progress and, after becoming a member of Ely Archers in July, has gone from strength to strength. George finished third in the under-18s category of the county championships held at the St Ivo Centre in St Ives last month, with a score of 502 points. He was required to shoot five dozen arrows over 20 yards. Former coach Andy Rutterford said: "I coached him myself but I think after three weeks I could see he was a natural shot." There was more success for Ely Archers at the county event. The husband and wife team of Jonathan and Ellen Adlem won the gents and ladies coupound competition, with scores of 557 and 545 respectively. For more information on archery, visit Littleport Leisure Centre, Camel Road, from 6.30pm on a Friday evening. Junior sessions are held on a Tuesday between 5-6pm. Alternatively, telephone the centre on 01353 860600.
