Ely power lifter Tom Baty retained the English Special Olympic Power lifting Championship held in Bradford at the weekend.
Tom, who is 30-years-old and has Downs Syndrome, competed in the 83kg division. He had to be on top form to beat his close rival from Yorkshire. In a tense finish, Tom’s final dead lift of 160 kilos was enough to win.
Tom trains at the Paradise Centre and at the West End Gym, both in Ely. Richard Baty, Tom’s father, said: “Tom’s final lift was one of his best ever efforts, he lifted twice his body weight to win. Thanks for this must go to his coach, Paul Smith, who has helped to build up his core strength in training. We are all really proud of his success.”
