TAE KWON-DO students from Ely, Mildenhall and Burwell are preparing to give cancer a kicking by taking part in what is thought to be a world record attempt.

Approximately 250 members of the Mark Farnham Schools of Tae Kwon-Do across East Anglia are expecting to raise at least £10,000 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity by taking part in a 24-hour class.

Head instructor and school owner Mark Farnham said: "I've never heard of anything like this ever being done before and I've been in touch with the Guinness Book of Records to try and find out if it's a record attempt. I don't think we'll be able to find out until the day it happens."

Students from the age of six to over 50 are expected to take part in the event at the Queen's School in Wisbech on December 8, from 7pm until 7pm the following day.

The students will be split into five groups, covering the many aspects of the Korean martial art, and these will change every 30 minutes.

Mr Farnham said: "Some of the students' lives have already been affected by cancer, and almost everyone at some point will in some way. The target figure we hope to achieve is £10,000 and with the response we seem to be receiving that is not an unlikely sum."

All students are being sponsored, many by the hour, and as an added incentive there will be medals awarded to juniors who complete 12 hours and adults who achieve the full 24 hours.

- Anyone who feels they can offer sponsorship money should contact either Mark Farnham on 077716 44460, 01553 841880, or mark@markfarnham.freeserve.co.uk, or Matthew Waring on 07921 197318.

Food and drink is also needed for the participants, particularly water and energy drinks as well as high energy foods such as energy bars, pasta and noodle snacks and fruits such as bananas. Anyone who can help with this should contact either Mark Farnham or write to Miss Claire Moore, Oakley Drive, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.
