Haddenham Rovers Colts A 4

IN an entertaining match Haddenham Rovers A ended their season with a hard-earned win away to a resilient Ely Crusaders B team.

Haddenham did all the attacking and missed several goal chances before Crusaders scored to take a shock lead.

Haddenham equalised before half time with a crisp strike from Matthew Morton, following some good set up play. With the wind behind them, Rovers took the lead when Mortons speculative long range effort eluded the Ely keeper. Crusasers then made the score 2-2 when they converted a penalty. Rovers created several more excellent chances before the lively James Beary converted a neat through-ball and Beary then sealed the match with a super side-foot volley from a Morton cross. Morton hit a post just before the final whistle.

Haddenham: Matthew Morton, James Beary, Oliver Holden, John Falconer, Kieran Drummond, Theo Hall, Felix Peck, Joe Snooks, Alex Lowe, Elliot Littlefield.

THIS, the final match of the mini-league season, saw Ely notch up their 17th win out of 17 games.

Ely's rock-like defence of Ryan Marston, Harry Beeton and man of the match Tyler Thurston absorbed everything the visitors threw at them.

Ely's first goal came from a clearance by Oscar Haines, to Thomas Walker, who passed the ball for Scott Callaghan to score from distance with a superb strike.

The second half began as the first had ended, with both teams moving forward. This attacking play saw the visitors awarded a free-kick and, with the ball heading towards the top corner, Haines saved brilliantly on the way to keeping his seventh clean sheet of the season.

Ely's second came when Thurston once again broke out of defence to pass the ball to Tom Matcham, who beat one defender before slipping the ball through to Jack Rudkin to fire home from close range.

Crusaders: Oscar Haines, Ryan Marston, Tom Matcham, Harry Beeton, Tyler Thurston, Scott Callghan, Thomas Walker, Alex Cremer, Jack Rudkin.

Ely City 3 Soham Town Colts 5

AFTER a long season the teams of Ely City and Soham Town Colts didn't disappoint and entertained from start to finish. Ely took the lead early on with two goals in the first quarter.

Soham worked hard to get back into the match with some near misses and eventually the breakthrough came with a fine goal by Jordan Turpin. This was followed by another superb shot from Kieran Fuller to bring the match level.

Turpin's second goal gave Soham the lead for the first time in the match but Ely showed their spirit and fought back straight from the kick-off to make it 3-3. A penalty for handball was awarded to Soham, and up stepped Turpin, who converted to complete his hat trick.

The drama of the game continued right up to the last second as goalie Matthew Fretwell, with the last kick of the season, launched the ball the entire length of the pitch and into Ely's net.

Sutton Rangers 1

ELY started strongly and passed the ball well, creating numerous chances but just couldn't supply the finishing touch. Despite all the Ely pressure, Sutton broke from defence and scored with a cracking strike.

Ely didn't let their heads drop and were eventually rewarded when a great shot from Will Stephens squirmed through the keeper's legs for the equaliser. Charlie Root then got his name on the scoresheet when he fired home from the edge of the area following good work from Tom Walker on the left wing.

Scoring two goals seemed to settle Ely's nerves and it wasn't long before Jamie Simper took the ball on the half-way line and, despite two fouls and a very strong tackle, he burst through and unleashed a shot which gave the keeper no chance. Dominic Hunt then added Ely's final goal with a run which started deep in his own half, he dodged past the midfielders, forced his way through a defender's tackle and buried the ball low into the net.

Ely: Athi Ambi (C), Dominic Hunt, Sarah Lappin, Conor Logan, Daniel Moody, Mitchell Morse, Charlie Root, Jamie Simper, Will Stephens, Tom Walker, Ethan Weinberg.
