A valiant comeback ensured that one Ely & District Cycling Club rider would end a difficult race on a hopeful note.

Junior rider Tom Lewis was the only club cyclist to race at the weekend, where he rode in the British Cycling Cyclo-cross National Trophy series in South Shields.

A gridding problem in the first round before a crash in the second pushed Lewis to the back of the field, meaning he started fifth in the third round.

A heavy handicap gave Lewis limited chances to overtake, and he made a tentative start.

But he was able to at least gain a consolation after an improved performance.

But the rider, racing in the under 16 category, fought back during the second half of the race to overtake 12 riders and claim 25th place.

Lewis, who aimed for a top 20 spot in the north-east, heads to Torbay for the fourth round on November 19.
