WITCHAM bounced back from last week's loss at Burwell with a narrow 32-run win over Milton in the Cambs Junior Cup.
Keen to put a victory on the board after their league disappointment, Witcham redoubled their efforts with both bat and ball and performed superbly to restrict their plucky opponents.
The win puts Witcham through to the second round of the Junior Cup, scheduled to be played later this month.
Invited to bat first on a rain sodden pitch, the home side were immediately up against it as Milton took advantage of an unpredictable track. The Witcham top order fell relatively cheaply in the face of some testing bowling and, aside from a decent knock of 35 from Glen Griffiths, the batsmen largely struggled.
Witcham lost their last wicket in the 37th over to finish on 130.
Where Nigel Pate's men had faltered with the bat, Milton positively collapsed as they failed to get to grips with the Witcham attack, who managed to remove the top four batsmen for less than 40 runs.
With the middle and lower order exposed, the bowlers moved in for the kill and the last wicket tumbled in the 37th over with just 98 runs on the board. Milton's top scorer of 24 was courtesy of the extras column.
Griffiths once more rose to the fore, this time with the ball, as he claimed 3-19 to cap a fine day's work. Young Angus Pate chipped in with an impressive 3-25 to ensure Griffiths was well supported in the attack.
