Two of Ely Swimming Club’s swimmers took part in the East Region Winter Championships in Luton earlier this month - with Iona Trainer becoming the second fastest in the region after swimming to an impressive time.
12-year-old swimmer Iona Trainer achieved a new personal best in the 50m freestyle on Sunday November 8, recording a time of 28.85 seconds - the second fastest in the region for her age.
Iona spoke of her achievement, saying: “I’m really pleased - it’s a little bit hard to take in and it doesn’t feel real sometimes. Ely is so small and you don’t expect stuff like this to happen.”
After recording her excellent time, Iona is now aiming for national glory. She said: “I want to get a national time and I’d like to start to focus on my 100s and 200s.”
Julia Yeates also swam in the competition and achiebved a personal best in the 50m backstroke, achieving a time of 33.33 seconds. She is now set to represent her university.
