Five seems to be the magic number for Ely City at the moment.

The Robins chalked up their fifth straight Thurlow Nunn Premier Division win with an excellent 5-1 success over Haverhill Borough last night.

That victory – which followed a hard-fought 1-0 win at Great Yarmouth Town on Saturday - has fired Ely into sixth into the league standings and boss Brady Stone says his side’s lofty league position is down to the excellent team spirit within his squad.

“We’ve played a few games less than some of the other teams around us but the main thing is getting points on the board,” he said.

“We went to Yarmouth on Saturday which is always a tough place to go and put in a gritty performance and then scored five on Tuesday which I think shows the depth we have in the squad.

“We’ve brought in a few players recently with a lot of experience in this division and I think that is showing at the moment. The lads are playing well as a team and with big smiles on their faces.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t paying attention to the league table but we’re just taking each game as they come. We said at the start of the season that we want to stay up but we’re in the top six now and if we can finish there then that will be fantastic.”

Nick Heap, James Seymour, Ash Walter, Matty Simpson and Deakan Napier’s first goal for the club fired Ely to their five-star victory last night and Stone will hope for a repeat performance when his side face another of the division’s strugglers on Saturday, Wivenhoe Town (3pm).

The Essex outfit sit rock bottom having won just two games all season but Stone has warned his players not to let complacency creep into their game.

“Wivenhoe is always a tough game so we know it won’t be easy,” he said.

“Complacency could always come in but it could have against Haverhill and we scored five in that game so the players know how they have to perform and have to work hard for their right to play.”

Ely’s reserves also turned in a five-star display this week.

They beat Fowlmere 5-2 in the Kershaw Senior A Division thanks to a Lewis Hook double, Jon Brown, Rhys Mazey and Scott Callaghan’s first goal for the club.
