Ely City snapped their seven-game Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division losing streak last Saturday.

The Robins collected a welcome point in a 2-2 draw against top-six side Brantham Athletic at the Ellgia Stadium – but manager Brady Stone was gutted to see his men miss out on victory after twice hitting the front.

Tom Williams headed in a Jamie Allsop free-kick to put Ely ahead six minutes before the break – a deserved breakthrough after a pleasing performance in the first half.

The lead was wiped out on the hour following a quick Brantham breakaway, but the response from Ely pleased Stone.

They restored their advantage with 10 minutes to go when Sam Reed slammed in a Sam Goodge lay-off after a corner from Allsop had caused problems for the Brantham defence.

But City couldn’t hold on for a welcome win as the visitors hit back with three minutes to go when a shot squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Evan Jeckells.

“It was important to end the losing run,” said Stone.

“Brantham are sitting in the top six and I’m sure I would have taken a draw had I been offered it before the game, but we should really have picked up all three.

“We still need to be a bit better in both boxes. We’re missing too many chances when on top and also giving away some silly goals at the other end.

“It seems that we’re being punished for every little mistake we make, but we’re not quite ruthless enough to take advantage of errors from opponents in the same way.”

Goodge has given Ely a boost by snubbing a move to higher-level Mildenhall Town, while Stone has made approaches for two potential new signings.

He has moved for Wisbech Town striker Ryan Harnwell and Cambridge City defender Adam Capel. Locally-based Capel had a brief spell with City early last season.

Ely face two tough tests in the coming days.

They travel to second-placed Wroxham in a Premier Division clash this Saturday before facing another set of title contenders, Godmanchester Rovers, in a Hinchingbrooke Cup tie at the Ellgia Stadium on Tuesday.

They could find themselves up against a couple of former Norwich City stars on Saturday with midfielder Simon Lappin and striker Grant Holt both in the Wroxham squad.
