Ely City 3 Norwich Union 2

VICTORY was not enough to save Ely City Hockey Club from relegation.

The game started with Ely the stronger side but numerous chances were spurned. The closest City came to scoring was when a shot from close in seemed to connect with a foot on the line, and the umpire gave another short corner despite Ely protests.

Ely maintained the pressure and edged in front when Charlie Kisby fired in a cross and Tommy Hugo wrong-footed the keeper with his deflection. Further pressure resulted in a second goal from Hugo and Ely finished the half comfortably on top.

Norwich started the second half much stronger, and after 10 minutes of heavy pressure found the net with a scrambled goal. This seemed to wake Ely and they managed to up their game, with their third goal coming from Nick Jameson's first of the season.

Norwich fired home a consolation goal from a short corner in the closing stages.

Ely captain Julian Palmer said: "Although relegated, we have been growing stronger in recent weeks. We now have the foundation to build a team that can return to this league next season.
