STRIKER Martin Westcott has left Ely City to team up with former Robins' manager Steve Taylor at Haverhill Rovers.

Westcott is City's second top scorer this season with 12 goals from 10 starts and eight substitute appearances in all competitions.

The front-man has just finished his third spell at the club after re-signing from Royston at the tail-end of last season.

Ely manager Dennis Lightning said: "Martin likes to play every week and he's become unsettled with the rotation system. I spoke to him when the offer came in from Haverhill, four or five weeks ago, and he didn't want to leave, but he approached me after the Long Melford game and told me he had changed his mind. The only thing I could do to keep him was to guarantee him a starting place every week and I wasn't prepared to do that."

The arrival of strikers Nick Impey and Tom Beech has meant that competition for places in Ely's attack has increased.

Westcott was regularly in City's starting line up at the beginning of the season, but, after picking up an injury, he has been limited to substitute appearances in recent weeks.

Lightning said: "Martin's a lovely lad and a good footballer. I wish him the best of luck for the rest of the season, apart from when we play against him, and I've told him that if things don't work out at his new club, then he is more than welcome back here.

"We've got three very good strikers at the club now in Nick, Tom and Robbie Mason, and I'm very happy with my squad, so I'm not looking to bring anyone in at the moment.
