GOLDIE Sayers sent a clear message to the world by claiming the biggest scalps of her international career on Sunday.
In grim Scottish weather, the Ely-based javelin thrower won the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Glasgow, throwing 63.59m to leave last year's world No.1 and No.2, Barbara Spotakova and Steffi Nerius, in her wake.
Sayers, who set a British record of 65.05m a fortnight ago, said: "This was the biggest win of my career because of the quality of the opposition I was up against.
"When I broke the British record I wasn't facing any real competition, so the pressure was off, but in Glasgow it was like competing in an Olympic final."
Sayers saw off the best women's field in Britain for more than a decade.
She beat all three medalists from last year's European Championships so things are looking rosy for her with the World Championships in Japan just 79 days away.
Former world record holder, European and Commonwealth javelin champion and Olympic medalist Steve Backley was impressed.
He said: "This was a career-changing performance for Goldie.
"To hit that distance in the rain against world-class opposition showed that she can mix it with the best."
Sayers said: "The trick now is to be consistent. The record felt so easy and I know I can throw much further.
"It's all about keeping things simple and training hard."
Sayers is in France and will compete tomorrow (Friday) in the Lille Grand Prix.
