ELY Tigers got back to winning ways with a commanding 47-7 win at home to Haverhill and District.

Ely ran over some seven tries against their opponents in what was a dominant display which keeps them top of the table and unbeaten so far this season.

Coach Paul Coulson said: "We played some excellent rugby in the first half and really put them under pressure, we let them back into it a little early in the second-half but we refocused and finished strongly

"I'm especially happy to have got back on track after our loss at Lowestoft and we will be looking to push on from here."

Ely came flying out of the traps in the early exchanges as they looked to exert early pressure on mid-table Haverhill. Some slick passing across the line from Kieren Kennett saw Joel Scott-Paul run in the opening try. After Sam Hewett had kicked over a penalty, Andy Hugo at 13 and two tries from Kennett at 15 soon got Ely into double figures with a sizeable cushion over their plucky visitors.

Haverhill came out for the second-half with renewed vigour and several strong drives eventually saw them muscle through the centre to run over their first try of the game. The score galvanised the visitors who then looked to benefit from errors that were creeping into Ely's game.

After riding out the worst of it though, Ely soon responded in kind and re-established themselves in the game with a fine solo try from Jon Hunt who wrong-footed a number of the Haverhill defence to run over Ely's first try of the second-half.

With another score under their belt, Ely kicked on and found success with some polished passing moves which time and again saw them find extra men wide to keep Haverhill on the back foot.

Further tries from Dan Coulson from a quick tap-and-go penalty and a Matt Kelly score were ably converted by Hewett to put the game out of sight with a tiring Haverhill starting to falter in defence.

Captain Mark Mitzman said: "It was good to get this win after the disappointment at Lowestoft and it was even better to retain our unbeaten league record.

"We are looking to get back into the Eastern Counties League One and to do that we have to have a good run up to Christmas.
