Budding mathematicians from around East Cambridgeshire grabbed their calculators and pencils and went head-to-head in their quests to be crowned Junior Maths Challenge champions.

11 teams of youngsters from Weatheralls School, Isleham Primary, Little Thetford Primary, St Andrew’s, St Mary’s and Downham Feoffees took part in a host of maths challenges at Soham Village College on Thursday June 16.

After four rounds of problem solving, Emily Chandler, Kia Yearn, Cameron Lee, Pijus Paliulis from Weatheralls came out on top, and a representative from the school was awarded first prize by Soham Village College principal, Carin Taylor.

Glen Redman, from Soham Village College, organised the day. “It was great to see first hand the enthusiasm every pupil had for maths,” he said.

“Towards the end the pupils completed a maths relay and were running to get the next challenge. The aim of the day was to show the most able maths pupils the fun side of mathematics and this was certainly achieved.”
