AS the countdown to the grand switch-on of Ely's Christmas lights begins, the city council is looking for a talented youngster to pull the switch that will bring the city to life.
Children across the district aged 10 and under are invited to take part in an Ely Standard art competition - and the winners in each age category will get to throw the switch with Ely mayor John Ison on the big day, December 1.
To take part, children must paint or draw a picture (maximum size A3) based around the theme "What Christmas Means to Me".
There will be two age categories, six and under and seven-10.
Meanwhile, volunteers have been working flat-out to get the city's display ready in time for the December 1 switch-on.
Councillor Nora Covell, who heads up the Christmas lights committee, has said the team are making good progress and have already completed much of the work in High Street and Fore Hill and some of Market Street.
"They are all volunteers, so if anyone can spare them a cup of coffee, we would be most grateful," she said, adding that Steeple Gate has been providing thirsty workers with hot drinks.
She said the committee would also welcome any help from qualified tradesmen who may be able to assist with the work.
Donation boxes for Ely's Christmas lights have been placed in 30 shops and businesses around the city, and Cllr Covell appealed to the public to help raise enough money to continue Ely's Christmas display.
