IMAGES like this have been splashed across billboards, newspapers, magazines and television screens as part of the latest NHS anti-smoking campaign called Get Unhooked.

But will it be effective?

ADAM LAZZARI spoke to people in Ely to ask them if it would put them off smoking.

Emma Balmforth, 25 from West Yorkshire

"THEY don't put me off. Pictures like this don't bring up an image of smoking, so it's not really very effective. People, particularly youngsters, will do what they like.

"I think the images used to raise awareness of cancer, had more of an impact."

Harvey Arber, 38, from Kennet

"THE picture doesn't concern me, I've seen much worse than that.

"I've been smoking for a long time, but I know I could give up whenever I want to. I certainly wouldn't be pushed into it by the Government."

Sue Sporle, 43, from Haddenham

"I THINK it's absolutely horrible and would definitely stop me from ever thinking about starting smoking.

"It's only right that such campaigns are used to stop people from smoking and pictures like this should be shown to young children and get the message across as early as possible, preferably before they start taking up the filthy habit."

Edward Carter, 72, originally from Sudbury and living in Ely

"I DON'T think people will take much notice of these images. They are not particularly shocking in this day and age.

"The NHS needs to bring home the fact that smoking causes lung cancer. If people were taken around hospitals and shown what smoking can do, that would put them off."

Catherine Brookhouse, 50, from Ely

"IT'S a really gruesome image. I don't smoke, but if I did I think it might put me off.

"It might help to stop some people smoking, but some kids today just aren't very easily shocked."

Jon Hargest, 16, from Ely

"THE image is good in that it grabs your attention, but young people need to be more alert to the facts of smoking.

I definitely think that schools should educate children more about the effects of smoking because there are so many people that just don't know enough about it.
