The Flying Scotsman is heading to Ely next month for a re-arranged day trip following an 11th hour breakdown earlier in the month.

Steam travel enthusiasts will be able to clamber aboard as the iconic locomotive takes them on an afternoon trip from Ely to London.

Originally organisers Steam Dream planned an evening visit to Norwich but have re-scheduled the journey for a Saturday afternoon London excursion on November 11.

Passengers will head to the capital mid-afternoon, spend 90 minutes there and return by a diesel-driven engine to Ely.

Dining passengers will be served a light meal on both legs of the journey.

The details of the rescheduled journeys were revealed in a letter of apology from Steam Dream to passengers who had booked to travel aboard the Scotsman on October 18.

It said: “Following the very frustrating failure of the Flying Scotsman at Peterborough, we would like again to apologise for the disappointment it caused everybody involved.

“Some problems are unfortunately always possible when operating an engine of any type and age on the rail network, regardless of the high standard of the upkeep and overhaul of the engine.”

Passengers unable to make the rescheduled trip next weekend have been offered a cash refund or a discount of three times the value of a future trip. The latter option will be valid for one year.

Hundreds of rail fans - both passengers and those waiting on platforms across Cambridgeshire - were left disappointed last week after the locomotive’s driving angle box bearing was found to be running warm and the trip was called off. It was then hauled to the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford where it will remain until November 11.

Any unsold seats for next week’s trip will be put on sale at full price on Monday (October 30) at midday.

The Flying Scotsman will be in Norwich on the morning of November 11 for a short excursion for those passengers disappointed when their earlier trip was also postponed. The morning of November 11
