Batman, Harry Potter and Where’s Wally? were all spotted coming through the school gates as children let their imaginations run wild.

As part of the event, staff from Burrows Bookshop, in Ely, attended classes and swapped World Book Day tokens for either the specially published books, or from among the shop’s collection.

Annabel Reddick of Burrows Bookshop, said: “We always enjoy World Book Day week, and spending a whole day at St Mary’s is one of the highlights of our activities. “This year we saw the whole school, with most of the children and staff getting into the spirit of the day dressed as a favourite book characters. It is always hard work, but so worthwhile, and such a joy to see children so engaged with books and reading.

“For those children we don’t get to see during this special week, we have plenty of the books in stock in the shop, and will be accepting the tokens for them, or towards the cost of other children’s books, until the end of March.”
