Animal charity Wood Green is in negotiation to open a shop in Ely.

The Godmanchester-based charity has announced plans to buy the former Millets outlet, in Market Place, and open a charity shop, raising funds for its work.

A spokesman said: “The negotiation and purchase process is under way for the old Millets shop, however, we’re still waiting on the results various surveys to come through before it completes.

“Negotiations are underway for Wood Green to purchase the property and turn it into a Wood Green shop, and more details are expected early in the new year.”

Millets closed its doors in 2011 with the shop unable to find a permanent occupant since then, although clothing retailer, Gun Hill, opened a pop-up shop on the site earlier this year.

Wood Green was founded in 1924, in London, by Louisa Snow. In 1987, the Godmanchester site was opened and it became the charity’s headquarters.
