Head boy Edward Ouzman, 15, gave up his half term to build a remembrance war memorial outside of Witchford Village College. He came up with the idea of building a war memorial outside of the college.

He began by looking at other memorials in the village and discussing with the friends the importance of having a memorial in the first place.

Along with local builder, Tim Phillips, Edward and some friends worked to get the memorial built in time for Remembrance Day.

Edward said: “I absolutely love it, it stands here proudly in front of the school and I’m amazed how it’s turned out – the school is built on an old RAF base from the last war when it was called RAF Witchford.

“My friends love the idea, they love remembering those that have fallen; my friend Riley helped with the build through half term too.”

The memorial stands proudly outside of Witchford VC and highlights the importance of remembering our fallen soldiers.

Chris Terry, Witchford VC head said: “The memorial is really important to the students at Witchford. Last year Edward came to me with the idea and we announced it to the whole school. Lots of students came to buy bricks - each of the bricks has been paid for by a student or a member of the community.

Edward: “I asked myself. What do the memorials mean to me? Well I know that those names are someone’s son, father, granddad, they are someone to everyone.

“So that’s where the idea came from and why it’s so important for everyone to remember them.”

He added: “The challenges of getting this built were enormous – so that’s why I dedicated my half term to getting it finished. We wouldn’t have done it without support from Tim, he was amazing.”
