A pair of lucky year 11 students from Witchford Village College were picked to participate in a tour of the France and Belgium battlefields.

The trip was held to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

Deahna Gillett and Lily Bottomley took part in the government funded trip, which included visits to the Battlefields of the Somme, the trenches of Thiepval Wood, Thiepval Memorial, Flanders Museum, the Menin Gate and Tyne Cot Cemetery, with English teacher Mrs Richardson.

The girls were also given the opportunity to make a clay figure which will form part of an art installation due to open in 2018 – the centenary of the end of the Great War.

They say they will use the experience as inspiration to write poetry in the style of the war poets they have studied during their English Literature lessons.
