WITCHFORD motorist David Phillips was almost double the legal drink-drive limit when he lost control of his car and smashed into a set of traffic lights.
Twenty-seven-year-old Phillips was approaching the lights on Milton Road in Cambridge on May 8 when he broke sharply, lost control of his Volkswagen Golf and smashed into a set of lights and nearby metal railings.
Both of the car’s airbags were deployed in the smash and an ambulance was rushed to the scene to treat Phillips, of 33 Main Street, who had suffered minor injuries.
Police were also called to the scene and took Phillips to Parkside Police Station where a reading of 64 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath was taken. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.
“I’m totally ashamed of what has happened,” Phillips told the court before district judge Ken Sheraton disqualified him from driving for 18 months. The 27-year-old was also fined �350 and ordered to pay costs of �85 along with a victim surcharge of �15.
