William Alvarez-Garmon, 7, from St Andrew’s Primary School, in Soham, entered the ‘Win Shoes for Your Class’ competition run by nationwide footwear retailer Charles Clinkard.

The competition attracted more than 300 entries from youngsters in Cambridgeshire and the Tees Valley.

From spy shoes to fairy slippers the entries demonstrated a high degree of creativity and literacy – with many of the children describing in great detail the kind of things they’d like their shoes to do.

Their ideas included buttons that allow shoes to fly, laces that tie themselves, magic soles allowing them to run faster or jump higher and one little boy designed shoes that could make him disappear at the touch of a buckle.

Seven-year old William wowed the judges with his creative and colourful design of a spy shoe with a flying rocket booster, a voice-activated outfit changer to disguise the wearer, a projector of the world and a hidden camera.

Winning the competition meant William won shoes for himself and 26 children in his class.

Each child was given a voucher entitling them to a free pair of Clarks shoes from Charles Clinkard up to the value of £50.

The Win Shoes for Your Class competition was organised as part of the company’s 90th anniversary celebrations – its first store opened in the North East in 1924.

Sue Howe, William’s class teacher, said: “We were thrilled when we found out William had won and that the prize was one the whole class could share in.

“We’re sure they’ll all be comparing their new shoes once they’ve been and had their feet measured by the experts at the Charles Clinkard store in Cambridge.”
