WILBURTON Theatre Group picked up a hatful of awards at this year’s Hunstanton Drama Festival, taking home four gongs for their production, I Never Thought.

The group picked up awards for Best Youth Production, Best Youth Actress, Best Supporting Actress and the Judith Cup for lighting, plot, set and music.

Their production, directed by Barry Starr, is based on the theme of teenage pregnancy and struck a cord with the judges, who called it “superb”. Festival judge James Farr, said: “Overall this was a very enjoyable and thought-provoking production and everyone concerned deserve sincere congratulation. The trophies received speak for themselves.”

The annual competition, organised by former Wilburton councilor, John Seaman MBE, takes place at the Princess Theatre and draws together many of the best amateur dramatic groups in East Anglia.

Michael Newbold, writer of the play said: “Having directed a fairly diverse mixture of plays over the last five years, I felt that this play was again somewhat of a departure from the normal.

“It is hoped that some of the schools in Cambridgeshire will take the opportunity to visit the Princess Theatre in October to view this award winning play, using it as an educational tool.”
