A WICKEN mechanic is on his way to Kenya - taking with him a container full of equipment for the disabled.

Peter Rash and his wife Julie, both members of St Laurence's Church, were shocked when they first heard about the lack of facilities for the disabled in the remote town of Mbaranga, at the feet of Mount Kenya.

They began collecting old wheelchairs, grab handles, and walking frames, as well as sterilising equipment and sent them off in a container ship two weeks ago.

The couple will fly out on November 3 to assess for themselves the needs of the disabled, frail and elderly in the area, travelling with the Bishop of Kenya to find out more.

Peter says he is on a constant hunt for unused wheelchairs and equipment, and intends to use his mechanic's skills to modify British-made chairs into three-wheelers capable of coping with Mbaranga's rough terrain.

The couple have collected a container full of items with the help of members of the Wicken Home Group.

INFO: Do you have any wheelchairs, grab handles or going spare? Contact the Ely Standard on 01353 667831 and we will put you in touch with Mr and Mrs Rash.
