Wicken Fete and Dog Show set to be success after fears it may not have been able to go ahead earlier this year
An annual village fete and dog show will go ahead despite fears that it may have not been staged later this month after 40 years.
Organisers of the Wicken Fete and Dog Show made a plea to residents earlier this year that unless they got the help they needed the event could have been scrapped.
It comes as turnout at committee meetings had dwindled in February, with bosses saying they were going to ‘call it a day’.
But a meeting date was fixed and flyers were posted through the doors of homes in Wicken, Upware and Padney to seek help.
A positive response saw old faces welcomed back to help and new people who wanted to continue to make the fete a success.
It was confirmed that it will take place on June 30 from 12noon to 4pm held on the village green.
Sara Rains, organiser, said: “Many have commented that the fete is the highlight of village life, and an occasion which brings us all together, and agree that it would be a ‘disaster to see it end’.
“It’s a very friendly occasion – people come from a long way around, and keep coming back each year.
“It’s one of the few occasions when the whole village comes together to enjoy themselves. There’s something for all ages. It’s a real old-fashioned fete.”
During the week beginning June 18 Fete committee members will go door to door asking for tombola and draw prizes in Wicken, Padney and Upware.
At 5pm on June 25 organisers will meet outside the Village Hall to put up the bunting – with any help appreciated.
Dog show entries will be taken from 11.30am, judging starts at 1pm.
Val Webb was the organiser of the first fete dog show in the 1970s.
The trophy is held for a year, with last year’s winner handing it over to the best child handler.
Attractions will range from a beer tent with music from Wicken Coronation Band, Jacen and the Rockanauts and Daff’s.
There will also be a bouncy castle, owls, vintage vehicles and fairground organ.
The event raises money for organisations that serve Wicken, Upware and Padney.
